I found myself under the influence of my sponsor, caught between loyalty and self-preservation. The situation became unbearable for me, even though it suited well the other person. Striking a balance between sponsor advice and personal goals is possible, but it starts with self-awareness and clarity.

Shannon, I completely agree with all the points! In particular, I want to emphasize one: the danger of relying too much on mentors and sponsors. While they can be valuable, we need to be cautious about the excessive loyalty we give them. It's essential to keep our eyes open for opportunities and remain proactive. Sometimes, these figures might present opportunities that ultimately keep us stuck in a position because it serves their interests rather than ours.

Excellent point! I’m glad you mentioned this. I think setting goal/intention you are aiming for before engaging in mentorship/sponsorship can help. What have you found to be helpful in avoiding too much reliance on mentors?
